Counseling in Allen, TX: What You Should Know Before Starting Counseling

WHO GOES TO COUNSELING?

The short answer: far more people than you think. The stereotype that therapy is only for crazy people in crisis is outdated. Today, counseling is increasingly seen as what it actually is- a safe space to build skills, process what’s happening, and get unstuck so you can function and thrive better in your day to day. At some point in life, everyone would benefit from counseling.

In my practice in Allen, I see:

• Kids (ages 13+) navigating anxiety, school stress, grief, life transitions, big emotions, family changes, or friendship struggles, etc

• Teens dealing with academic pressure, identity questions, depression, anxiety, family conflict, etc

• Adults working through anxiety, depression, OCD, grief, life transitions, self-esteem, pregnancy/postpartum, career struggles, or simply feeling stuck

• Couples rebuilding communication, navigating conflict, healing from broken trust, life transitions (new baby, career, grief, moving etc), preparing for marriage, blending families, the mental load etc

WHAT COUNSELING IS (AND ISN’T)

Counseling isn’t a referee session where someone gets declared right and the other wrong. It’s not advice-giving, and it’s not someone telling you what to do. A good counselor helps you see patterns you can’t see from inside yourself and gives you practical tools to replace what isn’t working. It’s both processing with talk therapy as well as applying new things in your day to day life.

What it IS:

• A structured safe space where you are heard and valued

• Practical skills based work (communication, emotional regulation, grounding, coping tools)

• Research backed, when you choose a therapist trained in evidence-based methods

What it ISN’T:

• A quick fix (most clients benefit from 8–20+ sessions)

• A sign something is wrong with you. Rather it’s a sign you’re invested in healing and growth

• A place to vent without accountability (venting occasionally can be healthy but not for the majority of sessions)

HOW MUCH DOES COUNSELING COST IN ALLEN?

In the DFW area, counseling with a licensed professional typically ranges from $150 to $250 per session. While some therapists in Allen, Plano, and McKinney accept insurance, there are also many practices that are only private-pay (meaning they don’t file insurance directly). In those cases, you will be given a “superbill” (like a receipt) you can submit to your insurance for possible out-of-network reimbursement. Many of these practices also accept HSA/FSA as a form of payment.

Why private-pay? Insurance requires a mental health diagnosis, which isn’t always appropriate (especially for couples work), and it limits the therapist’s flexibility in how they work with you. Private-pay lets therapists tailor treatment without insurance constraints.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT THERAPIST

Finding the right fit matters enormously in therapy. You need to feel comfortable to open up fully in order for sessions to be effective. Here’s a few suggestions of things to consider asking before you book:

  • What’s your specialty, and what kinds of clients do you most often work with?
  • What’s your approach? (Look for answers that mention evidence-based frameworks such as CBT, DBT, Solution Focused, Gottman Method, EFT, Attachment Theory, etc.)
  • Do you see children/teens/couples/adults (make sure they see the population you’re seeking care for)?
  • Do you offer Christian counseling? (if that applies to you)

IN-PERSON OR TELEHEALTH?

Both work wonderfully! It varies person to person especially when some people have a preference for one over the other. In-person tends to work better for younger kids, clients who need a physical boundary from home chaos, or couples with very high conflict. Telehealth is often the right call for busy adults, teens, clients with long commutes, or couples who travel a lot.

Most Allen-area therapists (myself included) offer both.

WHEN TO GO

The biggest mistake I see is people waiting too long. For couples specifically, research from the Gottman Institute shows the average couple waits 6 years after problems emerge before seeking help. By then, patterns are entrenched.

Go before you think you need to, especially if any of these are true:

  • You (or your child/teen/spouse) are struggling with anxiety, depression, or stress that’s interfering with daily life
  • You’re navigating a major life transition and feeling overwhelmed
  • You and your spouse keep having the same argument
  • You’re grieving and not sure how to move forward
  • You’re preparing for marriage or other major life change
  • You’re having intrusive or suicidal thoughts, struggling with self-harm

•     Something just feels off and you’d like support figuring out what

…it’s time.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN YOUR FIRST SESSION

Most first sessions are informational and assessment-focused. Your therapist will want to hear what brought you in, some history, and what you want to get out of therapy. You don’t need to prepare anything (outside of having forms signed previously)- just show up.

I also offer a free 15-minute phone consultation before the first session if needed (some client’s don’t) so we can make sure we’re a good fit. Most therapists in Allen offer something similar.
